It’s no secret that your roof is the most exposed part of your home, and it’s prone to host of issues if not correctly designed.

Every day, your roof is exposed to different weather elements; over time, this exposure makes your roof vulnerable to damage and other issues.

It doesn’t matter if you used the best materials for your roof; you will always experience problems that require repairs. While you can quickly identify and fix some of these problems, some need professional roofers to fix them.

In this article, you will learn the 5 areas of your roof system that are prone to damage. If you can keep track of these areas, you can always maintain an attractive look for your home. Don’t forget, the more attractive your roof looks, the higher the curb appeal.

A word of advice – it’s not advisable to climb up and assess your roof yourself. You should hire a professional to handle it for you. It’s beyond your skill set and could be dangerous for you.

Here are the 5 areas of your roof system that are prone to damage;

#1. The Gutter System

The gutter system functions to channel water away from your roof to the ground. It’s an essential component of your roof system that protects your home’s structural integrity.

Sometimes, gutters tend to sag and pull away from the fascia due to debris, leaves, and twigs. Again, your roof’s gutter system can deteriorate due to age. When this happens, the gutters will develop holes and leaks which prevent them from directing water effectively.

Furthermore, there are instances when the hangers that secure the gutters to the fascia lose. If you fail to tighten the hangers, the gutter may fall off.

Ensure you clean your gutter regularly and invest in gutter extensions to protect your building foundation better.

#2. The Roof Shingles

Roof shingles are arguably the most popular types of roof; this is because they are affordable and easier to maintain. Like every other type of roof, shingles have their challenges.

After a while, you will notice that some of your roof shingles are either missing or broken. And if you don’t detect missing or broken shingles on time, it exposes wood around the areas to rot and could cause severe water damage.

Furthermore, your roof shingles can either curl or buckle due to inadequate ventilation or poor installation. Whenever you notice missing or broken shingles, try to fix or repair it on time because it makes your roof susceptible to damage.

#3. Flashings

Flashings play an essential role in a roofing system. They seal voids in a roofing system in places like edges, walls, valleys, and drains where covering is interrupted. So, when there are flashings in these areas, they prevent water leaks.

Like every other component of a roof system, flashings deteriorate over time as a result of oxidation and water. And there are instances when they become lose and require repairs. Whichever way, try to inspect your flashings once in a while.

#4. Soffit

Soffit is somewhere on your roof’s underside. Most times, it’s invisible, and it’s vented with small holes to provide circulation and draws heat and moisture from your home.

Generally, soffit helps to make your home more comfortable by regulating the attic’s temperature and provide adequate ventilation. However, it’s vulnerable to cracks, rots, and holes. If you fail to fix any issue with your soffit, it may give way for insects and other animals to enter your home.

#5. Fascia

Fascia is another essential component of the roof system that beautifies the edge of your roof. It also protects your roof from outdoor elements like water. Fascia is prone to moisture damage, which makes it rot and look unpleasant.

So, whenever you notice rots or unpleasant looks around your fascia, call a roofer immediately to carry out a full inspection.
